When I first entered into the lesbian community two and half years ago I had no idea what to expect. What I encountered was a cult-like group of women, of self-proclaimed feminists who did little to nothing to try and include you into their cirlce. They spoke ill of one another, looked at people outside of their circle as enimies...I can't even think clearly enough to put into words all of the things they did that made me feel uncomfortable and embarrased me to be a lesbian. I just remember thinking, man, there was never this much drama when I hung out with my straight friends. Can't these women think of anything else to do besides sitting around and talking bad about people? They were also very judgmental and unforgiving. One girl in particular had something bad to say about every new person that I was being introduced to at that particular time of my life. She carried hostility toward people she barely knew, who she had encountered maybe once or twice. Perhpas they said something she didn't like or dated one of her ex's, or was associated with someone she didn't like. Who knows. The point I'm trying to get at is that her world seemed small. All of their worlds really. But the most baffeling thing to me was how they all spoke out about being feminists. Odd since from the outside looking in you could see they barely treated each other with respect, so how can they claim to be feminists? It really, really, bothered me and maybe still does. I'm not a feminist, I don't know that much about it. You dont' have to be a feminist to be lesbian and it doesn't mean you're ignorant.
